another t shirt, another dress, another pair of sneakers. more bags more gadgets more everything. buying stuff is arguably the one thing that everyone loves.

it’s what society is based around. roughly speaking, the major aim of our lives is to earn money & buy things. then earn more money & buy better things.

and that’s okay, but conspicuous consumption [buying goods or services that mainly serve as status symbols] is where things get addictive.

no one really needs half the shit we buy, but it looks good and makes us feel better for a while.
but it’s arguable that the best things in life aren’t things.

those 10 (or 50) minutes of extra sleep in the morning, real laughter, great weather, true friends, true love, perfect health, helping someone out, the unconditional love your pet has for you (unless you have a cat)

all ultimately are worth much more than that hyped designer bag which was made for 100 times less than its sale price, and which will be out of fashion in a few months anyway
we also can’t ignore the environmental effect of mass consumerism. estimated annual product waste is over 6000 crore kilograms!

for example, iPhones can easily last you around 3 years, yet statistics show that close to 35% of buyers get the new one whenever it comes out. Broadly speaking, smartphones and gadgets are replaced every 15 months.

fast fashion and hype culture are major contributors to consumerism led eco degradation as well. its common knowledge that Nike, Adidas, H&M, Shein, Zara and many more; all run huge sweatshops in Vietnam, China, India etc.

bribing their way past environmental laws, mass polluting and underpaying child labour; just so we can choose from hundreds of “essential looks for the summer” or so that someone can buy their 7th pair of Air Jordans (I’m the someone)
companies aren’t going to stop exploiting labour and the environment for higher profits, and neither are we going to stop spending money on new trends and cool drops.

so what’s the solution, stop buying things you don’t need? not really, it’s your own money and ultimately your choice. no one else can define what you “need” other than you.

however it might not hurt to be just a little mindful at times about this privilege we have. and maybe postpone some impulse purchases to check whether or not you still want it a few days later. thanks for reading! shop ‘press ok to continue’ down below.
