The Censored Smoker

the answer has nothing to do with morality, health or safety. but instead with everyone’s worst best friend; capitalism. the problem wasn’t actually with cannabis, it was with hemp.

in the early 1930s, multi millionaire William Hearst ran a massive smear campaign against the plant to protect his interests in the timber industry.

this is because hemp was about to replace wood as a cheap raw material for the manufacture of paper, causing the demand for timber to crash and thus ending his monopoly.

it’s estimated that half his wealth was in trade related to the industry. the other half was complimentary, because he also owned 28 major newspapers, 18 magazines and several radio stations/media companies.

so the campaign was everywhere, and it was successful enough to get the US government to federally ban the plant altogether in 1937. (causing a blanket ban on hemp production)
this propaganda was based around the evils of “marihuana” and gave us iconic movies such as Reefer Madness.

this movie included scenes where a guy takes one puff of a joint and instantly decides to rob a bank (relatable) or someone taking a couple hits and jumping out of a 5th storey window there was also severe racism and xenophobia involved in amplifying the fear. with insane headlines such as “smoking weed turns mexicans to wild beasts” and many stories blaming “the blacks” for crimes they apparently did while high.
since W.Hearst owned basically every source of “credible” information, all of the propaganda worked perfectly.

in 1961, a UN treaty was signed by 73 major countries. this included making the plant entirely illegal, and eventually India had to adhere to international pressures.

so even with its long history of bhaang and vedic medicine, cannabis was stomped out and is still very illegal in India.

it’s interesting to see that the U.S now has no problems legalising the plant due to immense tax revenues and proven medical benefits. will india ever follow suit? highly doubtful, but maybe in a few decades.

until then it’s important to always respect the law and it’s view on the subject. our ‘censored smoker’ tee is a reference to the same.
